The eagerly anticipated early season Queens potatoes are about to work their way into meals across Ireland, as the first crop is being prepared to be harvested.
A warm Spring and earlier plantings of the crop has meant that Queens are due to arrive in shops two weeks earlier than in 2016. Their popularity, excellent taste and nutritional value means that the potatoes are in high demand, so make sure you get to supermarkets quickly so you can enjoy the tasty spud!
To mark the new potato season, we’re celebrating with a series of summer recipes in conjunction with leading dietitian, Aoife Hearne. These include a Sensational Summer Salad, Brazilian Potato & Vegetable Kebabs and Baked New Potatoes with Cod En Papillote.
Hearne travelled to Griffins Farm for the start of this year’s harvest, and to see the first potatoes being dug.
Hearne says: “The season is finally upon for Queens, and I can’t wait to be able to serve them up for my family and friends. They have been a staple part of my summer diet ever since I can remember and I know this is the case for so many people in Ireland. Potatoes are timeless, and as they are naturally fat free and gluten free, they are a great ingredient to include in meals for both adults and children to improve overall health.”
